Two millennia later, modern clinical medicine comes to fully agree with this Hippocratic dictum, restating it in the new meaning and terminology as "Evidence-Based Medicine" (Evidence Based MedicineThus, today, evidence-based medicine is defined as the grounding of clinical decisions in the process of systematically finding, evaluating and applying the findings of current research. With this methodology:

  • first, the patient's differential diagnostic problem is clearly formulated based on the main symptom, associated symptoms, personal history, clinical examination and paraclinical (imaging and laboratory) investigation
  • then or at the same time, the most up-to-date and authoritative medical literature sources (guidelines and articles) are searched and the results of the research are evaluated
  • finally, the diagnosis is made and the patient is informed of the best, recommended, effective and personalised treatments that, when applied, may benefit him/her

In contrast to the prevailing inferential logic of the past, which relied on basic research to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms, today's evidence-based medicine is based on outcome research, which systematically investigates the collective clinical experience through multicentre, randomised clinical trials.
